Rebecca Smith suffered an ischemic stroke that resulted in weakness and decreased sensation of the right upper extremity. After being closely monitored in the hospital for five days, Rebecca is referred to a subacute rehabilitation facility. Students design a rehabilitation program based on a series of prompts, serving as a review of motor control and performance principles, with the goal of improving Rebecca’s upper extremity function and independence. Then, students apply these motor control and performance principles to foster Rebecca’s independence by improving her ability to drive her vehicle. A persuasive essay is written to Rebecca’s insurance company suggesting adaptations to the bus steering wheel, providing justification for these changes. Students critically reflect on the project, describing their experiences and impact.
