Brian is a 27-year-old-male graduate student that was injured in a rugby game approximately ten days ago. He has a bruise on his lower back that is starting to go away. However, Brian has some minor, occasional pain radiating down into his thigh and leg that just won’t go away. This problem traces Brian through his first physical and a subsequent follow-up exam resulting from a progression of his symptoms, including some inability to control his bladder and bowels, erectile dysfunction, and muscular weakness in his toes. The student is asked to diagnose Brian and to answer a series of questions related to Brian’s problems and associated structures of the central nervous system.
